The So Cal Outlaws 14U spent the past weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona playing in the 2011 14u Perfect Game Desert Fall Invitational played at Salt River Fields home of the Spring Training Complex for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

Tournament play began on Saturday morning with the Outlaws playing against a very good Rawlings team comprised of players out of Arizona and Southern California. The So Cal Outlaws took a 9-5 contest from the 14U Rawlings Prospects.

RHP Michael Killen (2016, Millikan HS, Long Beach, CA) threw the first two innings and was up to 73 with good feel for a 64 mph curveball. While Adrian Quezada threw the final 4 innings allowing just 1 hit to get the win.

The game went back and forth for the first 3 innings before the Outlaws broke it open and won by the score of 9-5 .The So Cal offense was led by 1B Robert Funk (2015, Lakewood, CA HS) who had a pair of hits and RBI, and Devyn Nichol who had 2 hits and a run scored.

In game 2 of the day that was played right after the first game. The Outlaws sent Nate Polar to the hill. The So Cal Outlaws would have to come from behind to win a 3-2 contest with the AZ Wildfire as 3B Michael Killen (2016, Millikan HS, Long Beach, CA) squeezed in 2 runs scoring OF Weston Ellis (2015, Pacifica HS, Garden Grove, CA) and 1B Robert Funk (2015, Lakewood HS, 2-2 2runs ) who never slowed down rounding third to score the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th, and give the So Cal Outlaws the #1 seed in their pool. Polar went 6 strong innings allowing just 4 hits while striking out 5 giving up 2 unearned runs.

Sunday found the Outlaws facing off against the Rawlings club again in the semi-fianls. This game would not be anything like the first meeting!

In the bottom of the 6th with the score 0-0 Robert Funk drove the ball over the left-fielders head, and all the way to the wall for a stand up triple. Funk would eventually score when 3B Michael Killen (2016, Millikan HS, Long Beach, CA) once again laid down a perfect squeeze bunt.

The big play of the game would take place in the top of the 7th. After recording the first out of the inning on one pitch the following batter reached on an error, and the next batter would double. With the tying run on 3rd and the go ahead run on 2nd the next batter lifted a fly ball deep to left centerfield. Weston Ellis (2015 Pacifica HS) raced to the gap making the catch, and fired a strike all the way home throwing out the potential tying run at the plate with a game ending double play preserving the win.

Alex Garcia (2015 Garden Grove HS) went 7 complete innings to shutout the Prospects 1-0. Garcia scattered 5 hits while walking just 1 to get the big win and send the Outlaws into the championship game.

The championship game between the Chandler Rangers and So Ca Outlaws featured two undefeated teams in the tournament.

Chandler had beaten up on everyone they had played outscoring their opponents by a total of 36-0. In the top of the 1st the Outlaws Riley Dent (2016 LB Wilson HS) singled to left and Weston Ellis (2015 Pacifica HS) singled to right on a perfect hit & run. Both players would eventually score to give the Outlaws a 2-0 lead, and score the first runs against the Rangers in the tournament. Unfortunately the Rangers would tie it and eventually take the lead winning the tournament 7-2.

The Southern California Outlaws organization would like to congratulate all the players that participated in the 2011 14U Perfect Game Desert Fall Invitational.
